Privacy
DRAFT. This notice is a placeholder for the beta and has not been reviewed. It will change before somni is offered publicly.
What somni records
The device records only between two presses of its key. The red microphone lamp is wired to the microphones' power, so it is lit whenever they can hear, and a hardware switch mutes them. Nothing is recorded during the night.
Encryption
Audio is encrypted on the device the moment it is written, and stays encrypted on the memory card, on your phone when it relays a recording, and in storage. Only the somni backend can unwrap a recording's key, to transcribe it and to let you play it back. Deleting a recording deletes its key, which makes every remaining copy unreadable.
Where your data lives
In the United States (East Coast): the database and servers in Virginia, encrypted audio storage in Eastern North America, and transcription on GPUs in US East data centres.
Email: recovery codes and invite codes are sent through Resend (sending region Ireland; Resend keeps account data, metadata and logs in the United States). Only these codes are ever emailed, never anything you recorded.
Your choices
- Audio retention. By default the cleaned-up audio is kept so you can replay it. You can choose to have it deleted as soon as the transcript exists. The raw recording from the device's four microphones is always deleted once it has been processed.
- Export. You can export everything (transcripts as JSON, plus your audio) from the app.
- Deletion. You can delete single recordings or your whole account from the app; deletion removes the keys first and then the stored audio.
Logs
Our logs never contain transcript text, storage links, claim tokens, device keys or recovery codes. Device status events are kept 30 days and security events 90 days.
